I love mumblecore movies. Joe Swanberg's LOL and Hannah Takes the Stairs are some of the genre’s very best films. His 2011 effort, Uncle Kent, doesn’t hit that mark.
Uncle Kent isn’t bad. Swanberg’s always done a great job taking “real people” situations and infusing them with an under the surface higher meaning. He does it again here, although the meaning seems to have some obvious connection to literal and figurative masturbation (there’s plenty of both on screen). I’m sure I could make a stronger argument than that, but I’m not sure it’d be worth the effort.
If you’re a mumblecore nut like me, know that Uncle Kent is a solid film starring people you’ll recognize in a new yet familiar situation. If you’re not into the genre yet, start with Quiet City or LOL instead.
I’m giving it FOUR STARS on netflix only because I want the suggestions algorithm to know I like Joe Swanberg.
